xmas #1 countless to go
posted by mike at 8:56 am

well holdens first christmas is in the bag. In general im unsure he realized any of it happened. When we went to open presents, he no doubt found the empty boxes which once held his toys more entertaining then any time which were in them. Many people told me this would be the case, but now I can say with out a doubt, I could have gotten him empty boxes and he would have been just as happy. This christmas also saw the tides change in christmas from being all about each other, to being all about him. Which im totally fine with. I got some clothes which I sorely needed, and we both got some dough from the moms for some new furniture, but the boy definitly made out like a bandit. Easily doubeling his toy collection.

Also this being his first christmas I think I was more aware then ever about the spreading of the family time. Our families luckily/unluckily live 1 mile from each other. Lucky because this means that we can spend part of each day with the other, unlucky because we feel stressed to fit every one in as well as we can, especially w/ the boy in the picture this becomes more soo true. Yet the one thing which made it some what nicer / less stressfull this year is our families merged for one night. Now to alot of people this might seem to only make sence, but our families have had a more than rocky past, so in my world this was basicly like the isralies and palestinians getting to gether over christmas. Its amaizing how a grandchild can build bridges. Also was funny in the diversity it brough to the christmas night dinner. We used to call it “the wolf home for wayward jews on christmas” party , because it was where my jewish relatives would come on thanksgiving. Now that, that side of the family has disowned us more or less, its mostly just local family and freinds eating food from italy (my mom - lasanga, artichokes , Baccalà), eastern shore (my sister in law- crab dip) and now fillipines(inlaws - braso de mercidies, fruit salad , lumpia, pancit)

other items of note would be holden missing his first day in church. He fell asleep right before we were about to go , and so his lolo stayed with him, while we showed up in our traditional filipino late fashion. No joke, there were only 3 families who showed up later then us, and they were all filipino.

now I look forward to going to the shore w/ jim and jen for new years. Last year was our last new years alone, this will be the first of MANY to come where were not. It will also take alot of will power not to convince jim we should do this

Ho Ho HO
posted by jim at 6:56 pm

yeah yeah yeah. that’s what I say. actually holiday’s haven’t been so bad. Jen and I were talking today about how it feels very alien for us to actually say merry xmas to people. we’re so used to saying things like “have a good break” and trying to avoid the whole christian thing, that we’ve kinda become silly about it. I don’t think twice about telling my desi students to have a good diwali, but even when everyone is wearing a damn santa hat and giving presents during my class, I am reluctant to say merry xmas.

but yeah. 1/2way through the family-a-thon and here is the update

Driving to philly from DC takes 4.5 hours the day before xmas eve.

Things at jen’s mom’s house were cool. Her sister wasn’t to crazy and my brother in law didn’t talk about recidivism and pedophiles (he is a prison shrink, this is a common topic on the holidays)

today the PA turnpike was oddly devoid of traffic and construction. 4 hours from philly to pittsburgh. Unheard of!!! Unfortunately, the MAINT REQD light came on in the scion along the way. it’s still under warranty, but what a pain in the ass! tomorrow we get to spend at least part of the day at the dealership

dinner with the ‘res and much discussion of my dad’s new work gig. He quit his job a month ago and delivers potato chips as an independent contractor (like a paperboy but with chips). He seems to like it so far.

tried to fix my dad’s computer and install adaware on it. for some reason windows update won’t download.

with any luck I will get to spend some of my day climbing at the Steel City Rock Gym. There, I will learn the painful reality that I am not climbing stronger (as my recent performance at my local gym would indicate), but in fact, the ratings are getting softer.

possible bad things fixed?
posted by mike at 7:48 am

so my boss man was kind enough to notice yesterday that the geekpunk box was hot as hell. Looks like the power supply fan had died, which was causing the machine to over heat…. I think this is what was causing all the problems. Makes sence because if the processor is overheating it will basicly lose its mind… think of a riot…. it doesnt ever really occure in a snow storm….

so anyways, he helped me replace the fan in the power supply… and for now all seems well…

which is good because im sure im going to need this nice little writting outlet the next couple days

possible bad things ahead
posted by mike at 6:05 am

so today there was another kernel panic… for no reason I can distinguish..

so here are some possibilities….
1) the box is getting over heated… seems odd. but ok… dave pulled the power supply to the outside… we’ll see how this effects it

2) the ide controller on the board has decided to give up the ghost… at which point… I could put in a new ide card… this is a cheap thing… so if this is the case.. not such a big deal

3) the board is slowly losing its mind… at which point I need to buy/build a new box… which would just about suck

new day rising
posted by mike at 4:46 pm

ok so bad things happened…. the drive which hosted this blog , my email, our mp3s, photos etc… got fried. It slowly fell apart over a week. Like every good person who works in the geek fields, I spend my life telling people to back up, and the one thing I didnt do, was back up. Well not totally. I didnt back up the os or the blog. I still have the mp3s and photos. What is lost pretty much forever is all the posts, sadly this also includes all the early posts about cherokee being pregnant, and holdens birth… this upsets me alot.

anyways today I rebuilt the box using a 10 gig harddrive from my desktop which died 6 months ago. So to sum up geekpunk is back alive, it is now running fedora core 3 linux on a vaio that my brother thought was too slow to use for ms word work in 2000, on a 3 year old 10 gig hard drive from my now dead vanguard desktop, which once ran mandrake.

now to make this shit come completly back to life and look pretty…

here’s to fresh starts and regular back ups.
