Recently my mom was clearing out the basement, and found a caricature of my grandmother. It had its obligatory large head small body deal, in the small area where kids would have their body playing soccer or kicking in karate class, my late 60’s grandmother had her self depicted at a cafe table in Europe. She was definitely a woman who loved to travel, and document. When she traveled, she would first spend time documenting out where she was going, and with travel journal in hand she would document as she went along. Sure some of it was compulsive, like writing down the weather, and how much a news paper cost in Parma, but she loved it. Later I remember asking her why she always wrote down costs, and she said “so I can compare the next time I go”.
When I went to Europe in 96, she handed me 2 things when I left a st Christopher medal (even though her family swore off the catholic church when they moved here, superstition ran deep in her), and a travel journal… to write it all down in. Since then when ever I really travel, I write…. before hand making sure I know what I want to do and some quick references like addresses and phone numbers, and sit down once a day to write up a bit about the day.
So my book is ready, now just to trudge through 2 more days.
Ok, so I’m pretty excited about our big trip coming up this weekend. I know I’ll be asking myself “Why didn’t I give myself enough time?” but we’ll just have to make the best of the little time we have.
Mike gave me this CD to quickly learn some common french phrases, and unfortunately, the ones that I deem most important like “Please speak more slowly” or “I do not speak french” are the hardest to say. I know I’m probably going to break out in spanish a couple of times and really get them mad at me. I know how to ask where the metro is, but damn if they give me directions in French, i’m screwed! I’m sure funny tales will ensue
this is a precursor to me and missy doing a pittsburgh vs baltimore photo thread… in a week or so. These pics were all taken this weekend w/ my new camera, all of which were in fully manual.

actually it’s saturday. but the monkees never wrote a song called “pleasant valley saturday”. Woke up late today, wasted most of the morning and then went out for a ride on the surly. not an especially long ride but 2 cool things happened. I finally figured out how to skid. I realized that in the past, I just wasn’t going fast enough to skid. Also, I realized that Metzerott Road has some good riding on it.
This evening, we also hit up the mall so I could by a jacket for the super fancy Waba Gala (We’re not players, free tix from the shop). While there, I had my first celebrity sighting in a really long time. Bubbles!

He’s pretty short. He’s also much younger looking than he is on the wire. He was rocking sunglasses in the mall so people like me didn’t go “Bubbles! Bubbles!” I did a double take and he saw me and made a total “Oh, shit some guy is going to try and talk to me” face. So I played it cool. lame story. the end.
Well. I’m hardly a football fan. But since I moved away, I started paying more attention to Steelers football. It gives me something to talk to my dad about. I usually catch 3-5 games a year and this always picks up when playoffs roll around. Last time the Steelers were in the Superbowl it was Superbowl XXX Which we were really excited about because we were straightedge and we could get PITTSBURGH XXX gear. No longer straightedge but definitely more interested in the game now than I was. I’m not going to get all sports talk here because it would be painfully obvious that I am more of an individual outdoorsy guy and not a macho team sports football guy. But It would be nice to see win the superbowl in his second year and Jerome Bettis winning in his hometown not too long before his retirement(?)

Sunday I watched the game with a guy from the shop. It was cool because I never really get to watch football with other people. It’s definitely more interesting than chilling at home k-solo watching the game. Superbowl weekend I have a pretty packed deal.
Saturday: Charm City Art Space Flea Market.
Sunday: RPM Cycling Swap Meet (this is convenient because jen will be at all the superbowl yarn sales).
Then, the superbowl. I have yet to make full on viewing plans yet, but I might try to set up some kind of communal viewing deal so I can scream at the TV, eat hotwings and pretend that I follow the whole season. I can feel my punk rock points slowly fading away.
I saw anti-flag for the first time in 1994 at the rancid, avail, pink lincolns show… Also oddly enough the first time I meet miss missy. I was only living in pittsburgh for a couple months then, and all of 18 and barely able to see past the next couple months. About a year later, I remember hearing from several people that Justin Sane would always tell people he was 19 (in reality he was probably ear;y 20’s let flood of emails start here)… I thought it pretty funny, but also kind of appropriate, because honestly I couldnt imagine my self getting much older than that, and if I did, I couldnt imagine that I would happy enough with my life to accept the age. Well that was 12 years ago, yesterday I turned 30, and I can honestly say I’m much happier now at 30 than I ever was at 19.
I dont have the anger for the useless that I used to, but still have the anger towards the real problems. I no longer hate myself. I no longer harbor hatred for most of the world. I can see the sillyness in all the problems, including the ones we create our selves. I can see something arrise, and remebr the other 30 times some one tried to fix it, and all the things not to try again… while at the same time knowing it does have to be tried again. I know that love and comitment is something real and not just something to sing / write a zine about. I know what it means to be really alone, and I know what it means to be truelly loved. I know how it feels when you realize… wow I dont have a ton of friends anymore. I know what it means to be happy, truelly happy, and im greatful for it.
so yeah, yesterday I turned 30…. not 19 again.

The NY Times had an article on the growing popularity of spinning yarn.
so i know im way behind on an update, but ive been way busy as usual… so in the mean time here, is a call for recipe’s for a zine im doing.
eat your makeup (recipe’s from the Baltimore punk / diy / indie / underground) call for recipe’s
Hello,
Im starting to compile recipe’s for a Baltimore diy cookbook/zine, to be published in the spring of 06 to benefit the charm city art space. The cookbook will comprised of recipe’s submitted by our own community, be it crab cakes, tofu scrable, home made scrapple, vegan cookies, cherry pie’s, beer what ever in a zine format. Vegans, meat eaters, vegetarians, macrobiotic, pagans need all apply. Recipe submissions should include your standard ingredients, cooking directions, times etc, but can also include what music is best to listen to while cooking or books/zines which can fill the time during cooking times. Reworks of traditional Maryland cooking, your moms handed down recipe’s, your own inventions happily accepted, but please no recipe’s taken directly from other sources.
All those who submit recipe’s will receive 2 copies of the cookbook, as well as be able to take copies on consignment. An online version of the cookbook will also probably be made available several months after initial printing. Prices will be determined by cost of printing, but will probably be sold for around $5. All proceeds above cost will be donated to the charm city art space, a diy gallery and performance art space, which has been supporting the Baltimore indepent and punk arts since 2002 in a little row house on Maryland ave.
