interbike day one for real
posted by jim at 10:53 am

not just arriving. THis place is huge. bigger than huge. it’s very easy to get lost. I set out today to make sure I talked to all the important vendors because I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss them.

Entry level felt stuff looks great. Our sales rep wasn’t handy so we got the spiel from jim felt (the owner).

didn’t really get any face time with kona or jamis so I have to swing back there later but their stuff looks good for this year. barry wicks was there and I bored him with the tale of my first cx race. He’ll be at Granogue, I guess I’ll have to kick his ass.

the new orbea stuff is enough to make me want a $5000 road bike. I usually think that $5000 road bikes are excessive. ANd they are, except for the orca.

-autographs. Here’s me with dave zabriskie, we discussed my basment workshop and the fact that it is called “the manhole” he said this sounded prison like, he wanted to know if we would do the picture cheek to cheek.

Here is thor hushovdt. He doesn’t speak english very well. but he’s fast.

as the day went on, I saw a guy rocking a “septic death” shirt. ANd I thought wow, that’s awesome. that dude must be old-school. and then I looked closer and it was bill dillon. APparently he and whitesnake live in brooklyn now and run an online courier zine called mess nyc. it was rad seeing them and they told me about an alleycat they were throwing.

I was bikeless, but they said they were trying to get people to do it on demo bikes. I ran to kona and got a hold of jeff and he was into the idea, but I needed the bike in 20 minutes so it didn’t work out.

Next step, call tiny. He brought a folder here. Almost seemed like it was going to work out, but it didn’t. Ryan calls me and wanted to come hang out. I was outside with the race folks, I told him that to find us all he had to do was go outside and look for the black t-shirts.

Here’s some pictures from the pre-race drinking.

interbike day one

ok. the flight was long and crappy. puddle jumper from baltimore to chicago, overpriced burger in O’hare for dinner. Long flight to vegas. Funny thing is, on the flight there was an older guy rocking with a long goatee, interesting hat, and an old eddy mercx t-shirt. I tried to complement his shirt, but he didn’t hear me. I kept thinking he looked familiar. as he walked away from baggage claim and I saw the “one world one gear” patch on his bag. I realized. it was sheldon brown. Most everyone who ride a fixed gear bike and has a computer knows who he is. He is a super knowledgable mechanic who has TONS of FG info on his website. There is a slight chance it wasn’t him, but I’m pretty sure it was. I was going to go talk to him, but really this is how the conversation probably would have gone:

-hey, are you sheldon brown?
-yeah
-I refer to your website a lot when I have questions.
-yeah
-so you’re here for interbike huh?
-yeah
-my wife heard you singing along with your headphones on the flight.
-yeah.
-ok bye.

THis is not to say that he would be a jerk and respond like that. But really, what am I going to say other than “I like your webpage.”? I figure in a lot of occasions like that, if I don’t have anything worthwhile to bring to the table, I’m not going to hassle anybody. ALthough that may change because I’m told there will be a number of “bicycle celebrities” here.

Then, as a testament to people’s comments that I know someone everywhere I go. I saw someone I knew in line for the cab. When I was in this one band with mike and another guy named mike, I had to drive into DC every sunday and wake mike #2 up and drive him to practice. While he was brushing his teeth and being hung over, I would talk to his roommate who would smoke a cigarette and then leave for work at a bike shop. I saw him here. He didn’t remember me, but said he did after I explained how I knew him. so yeah. it’s 3:22 AM our time so I should probably go to sleep.

Race Report Charm City CX 06
posted by jim at 7:23 pm

last year when I bought the surly I said “well, I have a cross bike so I might as well do a cross race.” I never did. This year I gave it a go.

The day began on a bad note with my having forgot to bring cash for my one day race license, 30 minutes before the race I was driving around North Baltimore looking for an ATM. I managed to get one and made it back just in time. I knew that I wouldn’t have time to do a pre-ride so i figured should just embrace the nervousness. I get a little weird before triathlons, but it’s not that bad, because by and large, most people in triathlons are competing against themselves and their old times. Bike racing is a different animal. It is more socially intimidating (to me anyway). Even though you’re just there for fun, you’re still trying to do well, and it seems like that has a lot more to do with beating other people. For a “just in it for the t-shirt” kinda guy like me, that’s intimidating. A lot of people in full race kit on tricked out cross bikes didn’t help. I kept telling myself that doing it on a single speed was a built in excuse. Read the rest of this entry »
