TOP 20!!!
posted by jim at 6:33 pm

Well, my race results in this, my first cyclocross season, have been pretty dismal.  I usually come in around 50th or so.  But today I was in the top 20!!!!!!!!!!!  This may be a result of the fact that only 24 or 25 people were racing, but it’s a small victory all the same.  Here are some pics:

clearly, none of those pictures are of me.  But the guy in the NCVC jersey is Kevin.  He takes some pretty good race pictures.  If you are bored and want to check them out, you should go here or here.  Trevor got 3rd place.  pretty cool.
click below if you want to read more about the race itself.

wannabe art guy
posted by jim at 10:28 pm

so I spent most of the day doing some block prints.  I’m pretty happy with them.  they are going to be used as gift certificates at the bike shop.  It was my first time trying to do multiple images from the same block.  first I printed rectangles with the uncarved block.  then I carved the heart and printed on top of all of the rectangles, and then I carved the derailleur.  I started using dark ink and it didn’t look as good so I scrapped most of those and used white ink.

here are some pics to show how the process went.

Is not entirely unlike the impact that the brick had on jen’s car window during an incident of crime last night. It hits hard, it breaks barriers, and (insert another cheesy DJ music review statement here).

But the song “impact” didn’t leave a mess of broken glass all over the street by our house. I got a call around 10 last night on my cell phone from the Police who wanted to get in touch with jen (I have no idea how they got a hold of my cell #). It seems some teenagers threw a brick through jen’s window, rifled through the stuff, didn’t find anything valuable, and the left. The neighbor that called the police, also yelled at them. Something to this effect:

“Hey! At least close the door! If you’re going to break their window and take their stuff, at least have the decency to close the door so EVERYONE doesn’t go through their stuff!”

He does have a point. It happened the same day that the baltimore guide came out.

One of jen’s great joys is reading the crime blotter in the Baltimore guide while sipping a glass of wine. This is because they often include incredibly random details that are mildly hilarious i.e. “It is not known what became of the cake.” Jen has always said that if she is the victim of a crime, she will make sure to add some crazy detail in the report so it gets in the baltimore guide. Well, at the time of the report, it didn’t seem like anything was stolen. But after the fact, we realized that roughly $4.72 in canadian coins were taken. I don’t know if that’s good enough for the baltimore guide, but I guess we will find out.

I just found an mp3 blog and it’s AWESOME.  dedicated to bands that didn’t get the attention they should have.  metal and hardcore from when you could still tell the difference (most of the time anyway).

At the movies…
posted by jim at 11:26 pm

So I just saw American Hardcore. Here are some thoughts.

  • No matter how many different hardcore/punk retrospectives I see/read, it never seems to totally get it right for me. The movie seemed like a good summary of what was going on in 1980-1985. I’m waiting for one that does 89-95. It’s funny because when you see something like this, you see the evolution. It was very different for us coming up than it was for the older guys. THe same way it was different for us than it is for the kids today.
  • ONe of the kinda weaker parts of the movie is this:
  • part one: “Man we were crazy, we beat the crap out of people and started riots and punched kids for no reason! It was hard-core!”
  • part two: “Man, the cops picked on us, we never started anything, we were just kids having fun.  It’s not like we were starting riots or punching people for no reason.”
  • part three: (insert overthought overstated comments about how revolutionary hardcore was).
  • Seeing the movie in Baltimore further reinforced my theory that there are SO MANY people in baltimore involved in some sort of punk scene, but these punk scenes don’t have anything to do with each other. THeatre was full of people ranging in age (by my best guess) from 50-20. It really didn’t seem like anyone was just a curious movie-goer. It was clear that everyone in the room had some tie to the scene at one time or another. BUT, it was clear that no one in the room knew each other, or cared to.
  • funny moment. Some line about how some punk guy did something really mean to someone like beat them up and relieved himself on him or something like that and a little kid (son of a hardcore guy) started giggling and said “He’s funny!”
  • Now I just want to listen to the bad brains all day long for a month!
  • It’s good. I’m glad I saw it. It’s probably a little boring for someone who’s not a part of the scene.
