come watch us romp and roll
posted by jim at 7:33 am

2 shows this weekend for the mike and jim extravaganza band. if you want to come out and see us tonight, we will be at the talking head with a bunch of rocker type bands. If you have kids or are expecting kids soon, you might not want to be around the smoke and sassy people so you should come out to the rock and romp show tomorrow.

holden update list
posted by mike at 4:44 pm

so holden has been doing some crazy “advances”, Ive been meaning to write this all down for a while…. so here is a holden bulleted list.

  • he has been all about the They might be giants , more specificly here come the abc’s, and even more specificly d&w and go for g… he demands it in the car, and will sing along full on with dancing.
  • speaking of dancing , last night he pointed at the boombox in his room and stated he wanted to dance
  • he also gets really excited when the ramones comes on his mix cd
  • further related, he does this dancing move we call stiring the pot, which involves him rotating his arm in a circle, not so much in the air, but like in a circle like your stiring a pot. He has also recently picked up his version of a circle pit, where he runs around in a circle offten while stiring the pot.
  • We got him fish for his bday, one is named nemo the other is named fish
  • Last weekend he came to the realization that he is “holden” and will refer to himself as such.
  • In related news he has , as always, been all about reading, only now he’s not to keen on us reading to him, instead he will say “no holden read”
  • We put up a huge map in his room, and he can now tell you he’s from baltimore, moma is from the philipines, and point in the proximity of said places. He also will show you that penguins live in antartica.
  • He’s also been all about “ makeing” as he calls it… basicly doing art projects, be it w/ clay or feathers or “colors

I cant quite think of the other stuff right now, but this is a good list to start.

summer is one day shorter
posted by jim at 10:21 am

well. By the time I went to bed, I had bought into the and actually wanted the snow day. I made a point of doing no work since it was a summer sacrifice. I woke up late, rode my bike to ikea to buy a frame for a print I ordered. And discovered that while my huge ass bag will hold ALMOST everything, a 27×19 frame falls outstide of it’s ability range.

But it was not a wasted trip, it was my first real ride on snow. I took the singlespeed out and the snow made the pretty pedestrian street, bike-path, grassy-hills-for-fun route a lot more interesting. I have pretty wide tires on it (2.3) but I there were plenty of times that they didn’t have the bite to keep me going straight and I ended up fishtailing all over. It took me forever too, but might just be because I’m slow. I took this pic of the tornado alley section of the bike path.

when I got home we got a call to sit for H-dog. It was our first sitting experience so we were kinda nervous. Jen missed that part of being a 13 year old girl and I’ve always considered my strength with Holden to be holding him upside down and making noises that he likes.

But, there were no zany mishaps ala

so everything went well (although it would have been cool to see Thor). watched some peewee’s playhouse, played with some boxes, drank some apple juice, drew some pictures and then bedtime came. This sneaky-ass kid has the bedtime tricks down. as soon as bedtime came around, that was when he finally learned our names so sucker-ass “aunt jen” and “jim” were more reluctant to put him to bed. but it all worked out in the end, even though asking to watch more tv, asking where darby was, asking for a book, and asking for more apple juice all came into play. While this parent stuff is old hat to whatsername and whatsisname, babysitting is new to good old aunt jen and uncle jim so we were happy to come out unscathed.

I also thought it would be funny like in the movies, if the babysitters were making out on the couch when the parents came home, but instead we watched kung fu hustle.

what do pirates say…
posted by mike at 11:54 pm

So tonight was holdens first trick of treating escapade. I’m not 100% sure he understood what was going on, but he sure as hell got the trick or treat line down pat. Which is good because we had been working on it for a week now. We just did the blocks imediate to our house. Like every year trick or treating in my neighborhood is both enlighting and fun. First of all most of my “real” neighbors sit outside on their stoop and pass out candy. I say “real” because for the most part the yuppies who moved here to drink and fuck, and who dont talk to me to begin with, dont bother with the whole trick or treat thing either. Then you have the neighborhood kids who you expect to see, then you have kids who come out of the wood works who you have no idea where they came from, then you have allot of kids who come from neighborhoods farther north and east who know that for the most part our neighborhood is pretty safe, and populated w/ houses who hand out the good stuff. One house we went to was giving out full size hershey bars. Then you have the last minute kids, I say kids loosely because some had full facial har and children of their own, who come around near the end of the evening w/ little or no costumes. I usually dont care, because hell every one loves candy, why would we need an excuse.

so yah in short, holden had fun, got lots of candy, most of which contains peanuts which he sadly cant eat. He said trick or treat… or really more like “tick tet” at least 80% of the time, and every so offten you could get him to respond with “arrrrrrr” when asked “what do pirates say”. Halloween w/ a kid so much funer than before.

give me candy

post tick tet

what a difference a year can make
posted by mike at 11:47 pm

so every so offten , I get pretty blown away how quick this whole parenting thing is going. Yah, yah, yah, they all warn you it moves pretty fast, but the same way that you feel like your driving 30mph on the pa turn pike, when there is no car around you to give you a perspective of your speed, you dont notice how quick its moving until you see something blatant, like a quick scroll in iphoto, to remind you… “holly crap, he looks like a little boy”

tonight I downloaded some pics on ye old camera and had one of those moments.

here he is 1 year ago at the pumpkin patch, being held up, not much bigger than a pumpkin himself

baby

and here he is last weekend a little ball of chaos holding his own pumpkin

almost a man

I know those of you w/ out kids, are thinking…. uh duh… time == age… but im sorry, sometimes you forget how quick its moving. I say this after having handed out my first time out tonight.

good times to come.

summer loving
posted by mike at 6:28 pm

so this past week the fam went , as we say here in bawlmer, downey ocean, in our case it was to my moms house in bethany de. As with all good trips to the shore, it was everything while nothing at all, all at once. We did most things we set out to do, but at the same time set out to do basicly nothing, so it was easy to accomplish. I did a brick of swimming and running , in the ocean no less, and that worked out better than I was expecting. Cherokee started running, and did pretty well, hopefully we’ll pick up on that tomorrow if this heat lets up. We did some reading, alot of chilling, and even more ice cream eating. Yet most of all we basked in the fun that is holden on vacation. Really he is fun, sure a pain in the arse, and every small trip involves a supply of snacks and basic supplies, but I have to say the shore is funner with him. For one, your own personal must do everything schedule gets pushed aside, because your more flexible then him, and there is some small comfort in that. Also his need for naps ensures your time for catching up on movies and reading, forced calm. Having some one to keep you home at night at the shore, means you can perfect important skills like, how to make a home made rum punch. But most of all seeing him get excited and show real honest pleasures out of the simple shore fun , makes it 100x better. We found that he doesnt hate the water as much as we feared, he doesnt seem to find eating sand as disgusting as the rest of us, he enjoys dipin dots just as much as cherokee, he has mastered the concept of yes and no as in would you like some fruit “no no nono no” would you like some ice cream “yesssss” , the mere sight of a carosel can set him into a excitement panic attack, and that he has mastered his first sentence “there it is” as in “hey holden wheres the carosel?” “there it is”. Plus he has found that unlike his hatered for hats, he doesnt mind sun glasses, as seen below. So yah in short…. shore good time, not looking forward to returning to the real world in oh 6 hours.
