AMAZING HARDCORE RESURRECTION
posted by jim at 9:24 am

yeah, as someone who plays in a band, I look at myspace as something that is necessary at this point, but I still kinda don’t like it.  BUT.  I used it to put up a band that I used to be in and have searched around trying to find other “dead” bands.  ANd I just found this:

TIMEBOMB MYSPACE

One of the greatest bands to ever come out of pittsburgh.  the songs are not downloadable.   But anytime you want to listen to “trying but falling” complete with a newly added sample from clerks.  it’s only a click away.

come watch us romp and roll
posted by jim at 7:33 am

2 shows this weekend for the mike and jim extravaganza band. if you want to come out and see us tonight, we will be at the talking head with a bunch of rocker type bands. If you have kids or are expecting kids soon, you might not want to be around the smoke and sassy people so you should come out to the rock and romp show tomorrow.

S P R I N G B R E A K ! ! ! ! ! !

Anytime I say those words, I think I should be yelling them like some drunken college kid on TV. As it winds down, it has been pretty awesome.

Friday night We left at 9pm for HP40. We had 6 people in a cargo van. It was a lot like being on tour, but more comfortable. I haven’t been climbing much, so I went without any serious climbing goals. I didn’t send anything that I hadn’t done before (save a few warmups that I hadn’t noticed before). It was more of a social trip with some climbing mixed in. At the height of it, there were 14 of us.

Guilty Pleasures
posted by jim at 10:22 pm

I just made a mix CD for a CD trade at the space. Mine is a guilty pleasure themed CD. There are a lot of things that I should be embarassed about, but am not. I will defend the first 2 earth crisis 7″s to the death for example. I love lita ford and loverboy. I feel no shame in these artists or songs, but a lot of other people would find shame in them. But here are some songs/artists that I feel slight pangs of embarrassment about but I love nonetheless. Read the rest of this entry »

an ode to justin sane
posted by mike at 9:54 pm

I saw anti-flag for the first time in 1994 at the rancid, avail, pink lincolns show… Also oddly enough the first time I meet miss missy. I was only living in pittsburgh for a couple months then, and all of 18 and barely able to see past the next couple months. About a year later, I remember hearing from several people that Justin Sane would always tell people he was 19 (in reality he was probably ear;y 20’s let flood of emails start here)… I thought it pretty funny, but also kind of appropriate, because honestly I couldnt imagine my self getting much older than that, and if I did, I couldnt imagine that I would happy enough with my life to accept the age. Well that was 12 years ago, yesterday I turned 30, and I can honestly say I’m much happier now at 30 than I ever was at 19.

I dont have the anger for the useless that I used to, but still have the anger towards the real problems. I no longer hate myself. I no longer harbor hatred for most of the world. I can see the sillyness in all the problems, including the ones we create our selves. I can see something arrise, and remebr the other 30 times some one tried to fix it, and all the things not to try again… while at the same time knowing it does have to be tried again. I know that love and comitment is something real and not just something to sing / write a zine about. I know what it means to be really alone, and I know what it means to be truelly loved. I know how it feels when you realize… wow I dont have a ton of friends anymore. I know what it means to be happy, truelly happy, and im greatful for it.

so yeah, yesterday I turned 30…. not 19 again.

Action Packed!
posted by jim at 10:04 pm

Friday evening brought some culture to our lives. We took advantage of the Clarice Smith Arts Center to check out a play. Hiroshima Maidens was all puppets about some pretty heavy stuff. It was 45 minutes of total puppet awesomeness. Unfortunately the play was 90 minutes long.

Saturday was an awesome day of riding, prepping the cue sheet for the ride of the living dead. THen we finished cleaning for our pumpkin carving party. The party was cool. a great time was had by all, then we went out for indian at udupi palace with the people who stayed later. Everyone’s pumpin looked rad. Jen’s especially.

Today was hectic. The ride started at 2:30 but the weird thing was that a lot of people showed up on time or early so there was a lot of hanging around before the ride. The group was split between some full on novices, some roadies on titanium hot bikes, some normal rider types, and the BMX bandit posse from the shop. There were quite a few mechanical problems all around and because I was the organizer, I felt like I had to take care of everyone. For this reason, I rode the whole course back and forth a million times.

Secret Lives are a great band and I really want to thank them for playing the show afterwards.

downsides:
broken crank on BMX bandit #1.
Super flat on BMX bandit #2.
Huge ass piece of glass on Pink FLoyd jersey guy
Mike messing up his cranks (again!)
No one participated in the pull-up contest t the fitness trail that was supposed to take place along the ride.
No one participated in the ride up the hill in your lowest gear race that was supposed to end the ride.
Very few costumes.

Even with all the downsides, it was still a really great day. Organizing a ride is way more stressful than booking a show. I must remember this.

July 18

so ive been working on these lyrics for a while now… its for a new south carey song im tentativly calling “talking to the taxman about running numbers” , its mostly about my grandmother, but in a more general sence is a little vinete about the destruction of the idea of job security.

Talking to the tax man about running number
she came down from the mountains of green
down to the city of greed
she had her tools in hand
she got a job working for the man
she worked day in she worked day out
documenting the rights we never got

she bounched me on her kneee
whispering to me
just like kenedy and camelot
this too will pass

daddies cut stone
they worked it to the bone
“its not the cough that carries you off
its the coughin they carry you off in”
he did work to the end
for us both you never know when

she moved the files here, she moved the files there
binary is short hand for whats not fair
words are tools, but both are no use
when your hands and lips will never be loose

she bounched me on her kneee
whispering to me
just like kenedy and camelot
this too will pass

woddy in the circle pit
posted by mike at 7:27 am

so last night I worked at show at the space. After everything Ive been dealing w/ (future post to come) , I really needed to get some energy out so I jumped on the bike and rode to the space. Baltimore is pretty awesome in alot of ways, but one of its little known secerets is how bike friendly the downtown is after 5:00… no joke you can ride plenty of streets w/ no fear… thanks commuters. Anywho back to the point at hand. The show was trees, counterfiet matt, slugs revenege, and defiance ohio, all of which would be under the sub genre of folk punk. It was by far one of the funnest shows ive been to in a while, it was pretty crowded , which meant tons of dough for the space, but not so crowded that it was a sauna in the basement. The bands were all pretty good and intense, especially defiance ohio. The crowd was generally, just fun… there was a circle pit and a human piramid, and even waltzing, all to banjos, cellos, and accoustic guitars. In ways the whole folk punk thing boggels my mind, how it evolved. Sure it makes sence, raw music is raw music and emotion is emotion… but seeing a kid w/ an assuck shirt singing along to mountain harmonies, freaks me out and warms my heart all at once.

BikesBurritosbands…behind the music.
posted by jim at 9:55 am

saturday morning I woke, packed the bike(s) onto jen’s roof rack. Put the computer in the passenger seat and rolled to mike’s. Mike fixed my computer because he is the bomb-ass friend that he is. We then proceeded to pack a scion XA with the following equipment:
3 bikes. 1 guitar amp. 1 guitar. 1 bass drum. 1 snare (in case). bag of drum hardware. bag of bike tools.

On to the space: Read the rest of this entry »
